Kea – Tzia, the gate of Cyclades!
The short distance from Athens (just 16 miles from Lavrio) its Cycladic color, the countless quiet beaches and rich historical tradition make it an ideal destination for short or long holidays from early spring until the first days of winter.
The Korissia port of Kea is built on the site of the ancient city of Korissos with Ioulida, Karthaia and Piiesa being the four cities of the island. Here, in 1930, the famous Kouros of Kea was found, a wonderful sculpture of the archaic period set forth in the Archaeological Museum of Athens.
At a 5.5 km distance, perched on the mountain and hidden from the pirates, is the capital of the island, Ioulida. The settlement is one of the best preserved in the Cyclades with a strong Cycladic architecture personality. The winding cobbled streets, with its featured roofing’s, the neoclassical buildings, the churches and the reddish roofs, create a wonderful setting where you can wander for hours. Interesting exhibits of Cycladic art are found in the archaeological museum. The Venetian castle built on the site of the ancient Acropolis, offers one of the most beautiful Aegean sunsets. Opposite stands the country’s “eternal guardian”, the famous stone lion sculpture, a 6metres length work of art of the 6th century.
However, Kea’s beauties do not end here. Deep ravines, small fields, stone banks, chapels, windmills, small picturesque cottages, sandy beaches and rugged mountain scenery, coexist and make it stand out.
Tzia is a quiet island, but when there is fun, things are changing and the nightlife ends with the sunrise!
